Obesity In Kids

Obese children will grow to be obese adults. In other words, an entire generation of unhealthy people.

Childhood Obesity

Fat, chubby, cuddly babies, everyone wants them. Leaner babies, have always been considered as non-healthy babies. ‘Fatten them’, ‘feed more’, ‘use butter and more sweets’, and finally, ‘give them whatever they want, at least they are eating’. Give them whatever they want, has become more of a bane than boon, for most children.

Childhood Obesity is not just puppy fat, as most parents believe. When body fat starts to accumulate in the body, it leads to obesity. It is measured, using Body Mass Index (BMI), that considers height, weight and sex of the child. For children under the age of two, it’s difficult to determine overweight or obesity. However, an eye on their development and growth can go along way in preventing obesity.

The Center on Aging Society reports that almost one-quarter of the U.S. population age 2 to 17 is obese. The most common cause of obesity is physical inactivity and consumption of high-calorie food, mainly in-between snacks. Childhood obesity has severe health and well being consequences. They are prone to develop some of the following disorders:

  • Health disorders such as, type-2 diabetes, heart diseases, infertility, cancer and dermatological disorders.
  • Emotional disorder resulting in low self-esteem, depression and eating disorders.
  • Social disorder as avoidance of public gatherings and meetings, fear of ridicule.
  • Childhood obesity will mostly lead to adult obesity and its associated illness and disorders.

Childhood obesity can be easily managed with help, from the family, medical practitioners and support groups. The simple concept of ‘energy in’ and ‘energy out’,can be followed for achieving better results. It means our dietary intake should be released in form of physical activity. Here are a few simple tips:

Maintain Healthy Weight

  • The adage, ‘Breakfast is the most important meal of the day’, holds true.
  • Losing weight should not be about skipping meals.
  • Ensure only healthy foods in the house.
  • Add a variety of vegetables in your salads. obesity kids photo
  • Add more fruits, instead of high-calorie sweets.
  • Minimize storage of ’snack food’.
  • Your cooking medium should be low fat.
  • Grilling, baking and steaming should replace frying.
  • Organic and wholegrain foods provide better nutrition.
  • Avoid storing soft drinks and concentrated fruit juices, instead get them to drink water.
  • Involve the child, if old enough in menu preparations.
  • Emphasize repeatedly, on the importance of nutrition in a diet.
  • Eliminate harmful food gradually, by replacing them with nutritious meals. When shopping, read labels carefully for the ingredients used. According to Dr. Jennifer Bourst, "If you can’t pronounce the ingredients listed on the label, then you don’t want it in your body."

Active Family, Healthy Family

  • Activity need not always be strenuous.
  • Make playtime fun and routine.
  • Go for family walks.
  • Gift a bicycle to your child.
  • Develop interest for sports in your children.
  • Introduce them to gardening.
  • Have them help in household chores.
  • Limit TV and computer time, as they are the biggest culprits of obesity.

Excuses of genes, big bones or slow metabolism as causes of obesity, are common. But they are mostly Myths. A restrictive diet, on your own account, to combat obesity is not healthy for a growing child. Work with your doctor to ensure a healthy life for your child.

Sometimes, it’s just about saying ‘No’ to harmful foods, never mind the tantrum.

Fast Food Obesity in Kids

We all know what causes obesity, and that is eating too much of the wrong kinds of food and not getting enough exercise. Some studies have shown that fast food causes obesity in children. However, the fast food industry claims that their foods do not cause obesity in kids. So, is there a link between fast food and obesity in children?

Fast food and Obesity in Children

Well, there appears to be both a link between fast food and obesity and fast food and obesity in children. Some of these links are large serving sizes, low fiber content, and increased content of fat, sugar and salt in most fast foods. Also, since kids are usually out running and playing together, lack of exercise does not seem to be a link in most kids. Studies have also shown that there has been a dramatic increase of the number of times per day and per week that families eat out since the 1950’s. Therefore, it is conceivable that fast food causes obesity.

Fast food and obesity-a link?
The first step is to decide: is there a link between fast food and obesity at all? Yes, there are several things about fast food that contribute to obesity in children. First, there are the large serving sizes that are easy to note. In recent years most fast food restaurants have come out with "super-size" portions of burgers, fries. In addition there are "pizza by the slice" restaurants, where one slice is almost the size of a plate.

Studies on what children eat and where they get it have shown that children got anywhere from 29-38% of their food from fast food sources. This adds up to approximately 6 pounds a year. This taken out to its extreme: a child from age 5-15 can gain an amazing 60 pounds, and that is a lot for someone who for most of that time is less than 5foot tall and should only weigh 100lbs (at 5ft) or even less. This shows that fast food restaurants are responsible for at least some of the overweight kids in our society.

More than just obese kids
The fast food industry does need to realize that there are other effects of fast food than just obesity. While anyone, but especially overweight children, are eating burgers, fries, pizza and coke products they are not getting the nutritious food that they need. Instead, they are getting empty calories. Calories, which have no nutritional value, are setting themselves up for diabetes, heart problems and other fatal disorders. This also leads to the stark realization that if this poor nutrition in our obese children.

Fast food in school
Since the late 70’s, schools have been offering fast food type meals in place of the regular school lunches. These schools report over 15,000 items sold each week, especially to those from higher income level families. In addition there are those teenagers that who work for the fast food restaurants and eat there at least one meal during their work schedule.

Advertising and obese children
Advertising, including television ads, billboards, and other advertising, including toys in boxed meals, has had an effect upon children as never before. Children these days are growing up with low concern for their health and more concern for what tastes good.

Without enough parental supervision, these kids grow up with little nutritional discretion and usually these kids grow into adults with both weight and health problems as well as teaching another generation that it is ok to waste money on unhealthy foods. So it is not only the young people of our generation that are being affected by the fast food industry, it is going to have an effect for generations to come, if something isn’t done about the consumption of fast food.

It’s up to us!
As is expected the fast food industry is not going to think it possible to suddenly change its direction after years of offering poor food choices. It will have to come from the consumer demanding healthier food choices. Our vote comes with where we shop and what we buy. Our children and grandchildren will grow up with weight and other health problems if they continue eating the fast food.

We can read all the studies that show links between fast food and obesity and fast food and obesity in children. We can look on as medical science proves that fast food causes obesity, but if we, as consumers do nothing and continue to feed these foods to our children, the health problems that will be the end result will be our own fault.

Obesity Could Cause Heart Disease

Obesity And Heart Disease Are Related

For years medical professionals believed that obesity and heart disease were only related indirectly. Major risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hardening of the arteries and type 2 diabetes are attributed to how obese a person is. Obesity was believed to be a contributing factor to heart disease, new studies now show a direct link between obesity and heart related diseases.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by using a person’s height and weight and applies to both men and women regardless of age, frame type or muscle mass. For example someone who is 5′5" tall and weighs 140 pounds will have a BMI of 23.3 and someone who is 5′10" tall and weighs 175 will have a BMI of 25.1. If you have a BMI of over 25 you are considered to be overweight and if you have a BMI of over 30 then you are considered to be obese. The body mass index calculation does not apply to athletes and body builders or pregnant women. If you wish to find your own BMI all you need to do is do a search on the Internet for BMI index and you will find a number of web sites that will calculate your BMI for you.

A recent 14 year study of middle aged women with a Body mass index of between 23 and 25 had an increase in the risk factor for coronary heart disease of over 50 percent. This study showed a direct connection between heart related diseases and obesity.

The left ventricle of the heart pumps oxygenated blood thought out the human body. Abnormalities of the left ventricle is primarily associated with high blood pressure or hypertension. However, there are recorded cases with this abnormality of the left ventricle has been seen where the patient is only suffering from sever obesity but has no signs of hypertension. This condition can lead to congestive heart disease and failure.

It has been shown that even a small reduction in overall weight such as caused by restriction of sodium in the diet, can dramatically improve heart function. Sodium restriction will only reduce overall weight for the short term but it is a good way to kick-start your weight reduction routine. If you suffer from morbid obesity, BMI index of over 40, you may be a candidate for gastro-intestinal surgery which can cause a drastic weight loss. Today over 33 percent of the American population is considered to be obese (BMI 30) and between 5 and 10 million are considered to be morbidly obese.

Everyone knows that reducing you food or calorie intake, some medications,  getting proper exercise  and quiting smoking can lead to weight reduction. Certain genetic and social factors can have a direct effect on how much you weigh. If your family has a history of being over weight then you are at risk of being over weight. If you attend a lot of social functions where food is the primary attraction then again you will be at risk. What is now well known is that certain allergic reactions to specific foods can cause weight gains and also can cause mental health issues.

If you have ever had a craving for a specific food that will not go away until you satisfy that craving. Dr William Philopott has speculated that frequent ingestion of allergenic foods will trigger a rise in the amount of opioid enkephalin found in the brain which is a natural narcotic that is produced by the human body. These chemicals can cause you to suffer from withdrawal symptoms when access to a particular food is denied.

Irritability, weakness, and hunger symptoms will not go away when food is consumed in normal amounts they you may be having an allergic and addictive response which in turn can result in uncontrollable eating.

Your health care professional may put you on a low allergen diet. After having started the low-allergen diet the patient usually experience a marked increased sense of well being with a first month. Food allergies or food intolerance can cause the body to retain both water and fat. Water retention is a common symptom of an allergic response. With a low-allergen diet a rapid water loss of five to ten pounds within a week is often noticed and after the excess water has been removed from the human body the patient will tend to loose fat more readily.

Common Vitamins and over the counter products can help with weight loss such as vitamin B, copper, Natural diuretics, Garlic, Lecithin and M.S.M.

Vitamin B taken together as B-Complex perform vital biological processes including aiding in the healing process for congestive heart failure and reduces fluid retention. Vitamin B boost energy levels.

There is strong evidence that trace mineral Copper is vital to the tensile strength of the coronary blood vessels.

Natural diuretics are contained in cranberries, anything that has caffeine and apple cider vinegar. Fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and cucumbers contain a lot of water and will help increase urination.

Garlic counteract the usual result of high fats in the diet and to help reduce high blood pressure.

Lecithin has the potential to protect against fat clogged arteries when take daily.

M.S.M maintains the development of the body’s protein by forming flexible disulfide bonds between certain amino acids and in maintaining the strength of connective tissue. This allows water and nutrients to flow freely into cells and allows toxins to flow freely out of the cells. M.S.M increases athletic stamina and helps eliminate muscle soreness. M.S.M is a natural supplement that is getting a lot of attention due to its role in tissue healing at the cellular level. It is a natural organic sulfur that comes from rain fall and is found naturally in the human body.
